I had an email about sharing the Bank Account left by a dead visitor to Africa... I sent a half hearted response then got this after some time:

I am revealing this to you on trust believing God you will not let me down in future. For your information I have the Diskette jacket file of the deceased which contains all the information of the account and the claim deposit document of the fund.

Acting dumb I asked what a Diskette jacket file is !

Maybe it happened a long time ago.... or the deceased was seriously into retro computing.

I still have a few diskettes in my office and a rather complicated setup to (try and) read any more that turn up. Surprising how many are still recoverable.

I remember floppy disks but I have never even seen a Telex machine.

Oh Agnomen! You have proved me so old. I used to work where we had a bank of telex machines and one in particular used to give me an electric shock every time I touched it !

Strange memories come back don't they !

^^I've dealt with lads who claimed to be head of a bank's Telex department.

About half of the lad emails I receive that ask for personal information have a blank for a fax number. I usually respond with "nobody uses faxes anymore."

On the other hand, they seem unable to understand that many people have non-cell phones, and some have no cell phone.

The lad is using a very old script. When I first started baiting there was one about finding "a red disk marked with an X" that was somewhat common.

Wow. Join the club, DoomAngel. I used telexes in my old business for years. What a chore it was to record a perforated paper tape to then run through the machine in order to keep transmission time down (they were VERY expensive!).

When fax machines came out it was a godsend. But of course that's dead technology as well.

My first computer used 8" floppies. And no hard drive.

The last PC with a floppy drive I have seen for sale at a computer shop must be at least three years ago.

But playing around with my Commodore Plus/4 as my second hobby, I'm quite used to 5.25" floppies. The disk drive weighs some 6 pounds, and its overall dimensions are twice or three times the size of a common DVD player.

One floppy keeps 170 kilobytes, i.e. a one-sheet Word document with not too much formatting....

Nevertheless much too much high sophisticated technology for West Africa.

Car dealers keep the fax machine alive and well in the US. Along with the dot matrix printer.

My first computer (a TRS-80 Model 1, back in the late 70s) and a whomping 2k of memory and used an external cassette tape. Rolling Eyes

Only ten years ago top of the range computers had about 256MB of RAM, now in 2015 we have PC's with 32GB of RAM. It's brings to mind Moore's Law;
