On American Sniper, Sheepdogs, and Baiters

Over the weekend, I saw "American Sniper". While I don't want to turn this thread into a movie review (although I will say that it is an incredible movie -- seriously, is Clint Eastwood even capable of directing a bad film?) there was a scene in there that really got me thinking.

Near the beginning of the film, it showed the main character as a young boy talking with his father, who was explaining the world to him. According to the father, the world is divided into three types of people: sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs. The sheep go through their lives, ignorant of what is going on around them. The wolves prey on the sheep, while the sheepdogs protect the sheep.

I'd heard this quote before, and I'd always tried to figure out where I fit in to this worldview. I'm way too cynical, rebellious, and anti-authoritarian to be a sheep, and I'm certainly no wolf. I always assumed that left sheepdog for me but I couldn't really point to anything that I was doing to patently protect someone else.

And that's when it hit me.

All of us here -- whether we're baiting for fun, for vengeance, out of boredom, or whatever -- are doing our part to protect others. Even though the majority of folks that we help will never even know what we did, we are all working to make one corner of the internet a slightly safer place.

So my hat is off to you, my fellow sheepdogs. I'm proud to spend my free time with people like you.

A wolf who weeps at the plight of the sheep and protects them compassionately may look like a wolf, but is a sheepdog at heart. And just as some of us are Nigerians who understand intuitively the wiles of Nigerian lads, to protect victims against Dakar Darlings it takes a Weeping Wolof.

I need to drink water and eat a banaana.

About as political as I'll get over the issue: don't make negative public statements about people who do not need a spotter to easily make your head explode at 1000 meters and might have a slight touch of the PTSD (which God's speed to all of them as that is by far the worst battle they will ever fight, themselves). There's just some sh*t you don't do in life. Laughing

Lads aren't wolves; they're hyenas and jackals.

My pack will hunt them down, and if Weeping Wolf 24 wishes to join in the hunt, he's more than welcome (provided he remembers that I'm a Beastmaster and thus a double Alpha).
