in 2011 Target Department Stores announced with major fanfare that it was opening stores Canada. The announcement spelled the end of our Zellers stores that although performing poor were still offering good deals every now and than.

Now not even 5 years later and after opening 133 Canadian stores, including 55 in Ontario, Target filed for Creditor Protection last Thursday and announced it would close all 133 stores by summer, throwing over 17,000 employees out of work.

Seems Target Canada owes more than $2.8 billion in debt. Numerous factors are mentioned including higher prices than in the USA, not enough selection and absolutely no e-retailing in Canada. Add it all up, people are not going to the stores like they were expected to.

Almost all of the Zellers stores were unionized, none of the Targets were. They are about as anti union as Wal Mart is. So no protection for the workers, just pink slips although they all get working notice which is more than a lot get in Canada.

Just another sign that you cannot bring a billion dollar corporation up north and expect Canadians to pay premium prices for the same items they can receive cheaper somewhere else. We Canadians demand value too. They came, they saw, they failed, they fold. Goodbye Target, stick to what you know, and leave us Canadians alone!

Bastards! I refuse to shop at the big box stores. Sure I pay a bit more for the mom&pops, but at least I am supporting my community! We only have one major grocery store up here (Stater Bros), but I do support them as they are now giving their employees the holidays off and they don't use those crappy "savings" cards that track everything I purchase. Not to mention they're the only grocery store for over 20 miles, I have no choice but to go to them. Laughing

I do have to eat after all.
