Hi everyone.

I have a dual book laptop with Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 installed. I would like to free up some space on the Win 7 partition and allocate it for the 8.1 partition.

I have, obviously, partitioned a drive before, but everything went smoothly. Unfortunately this time, I have some "unmovable" files, which defrag and optimize has not been able to solve.

I checked around the internet and there have been recommendations on a 3rd party tool(s) in order to combat this "unmovable files" that seems to plague a lot of users.

Has anyone used a 3rd party tool for this? I have looked up "Partition Magic" (as many boards seem to recommend it) and it seems good, but I am really hesitant to download and use 3rd party software when what is built into the OS, should, work.

OR - if someone can tell me the steps to move these unmovable files without a 3rd party software, I would really appreciate that, too!

Thanks! jump_4_joy

I don't know if this will help, but it's worth a look.

I don't know if it would. From article:
Quote:

Defraggler can put the large files you probably don't use that often (videos and archives, for example) at the end of the drive so that Windows can find the smaller files faster.

I don't want them at the end of the drive. That would make it impossible to shrink the drive.

I ended up going with http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html

Why that tool would work with unmovable files and windows disk manager wouldn't, is beyond me. At least it's done and I didn't have to wipe out Windows 7 partition. I rarely use the Win 7 partition, only for software testing, but I was about to wipe it clean.

Only one question why win 8.1 ?

I have found it damn confusing and annoying !

I am testing Windows 10 in as a virtual OS, and find it to be a wee bit better than Win 8, lets hope that MS listen to what the testers are telling them Exclamation

Why? Because I really like it! I like the features - especially search! I know a lot of people don't like it, but I have never heard the reason why. Something about their computer not looking like a cell phone, well guess what? Mine doesn't! It boots right to my desktop and I have all the programs I use most pinned in my taskbar. If I need one that isn't on there, I just move my mouse over to search, type a few letters and waa laa, there it is! I have over 270 programs installed on my laptop, so that feature come in handy for me. Much better than going to down the "start button" and scrolling up and out until I find what I need.

I am a Windows developer. I make my living building line-of-business applications and I am now taking up developing apps for phones and the windows store.

I was thinking about that, too. My laptop doesn't support virtualizations (It's 6 years old) and I don't have enough room for another partition, well, I guess I could spare 50GB and install it...

What is different about it? (That makes it a "wee bit better than win 8"?)
