On Beans

Baked beans go alongside hot dogs and potato chips.
Pork and beans are stand alone (I have a wonderful recipe for the oven)
Pintos (regardless bacon or ham hock) should only be served with fried potatoes and cornbread.

To muddle this up
To disobey the basic laws of the Universe,
It makes kittens cry,
Small children to suck their knuckles,
The streetlights to go out,
and birds to go silent.

And things to go dark.

I hate to disagree, but I will:

Baked beans go well at picnics (cheeseburgers, kabobs, mac salad, potato salad), etc. They also good on bread as sandwiches. When baked, they are good with some brown sugar cooked on top.

Pork and Beans: I survived many years in the Air Force slicing up cooked hot dogs and throwing them in with a can of pork and beans.

Pinto beans: Good in soups or as a substitute for kidney beans.

Fried potatoes and cornbread? Must be a southern redneck thing.

It is the sacred duty of pinto beans to be refried and served with rice, and whatever type of enchilada you prefer. Or else combined into a burrito with carnitas, rice, cheese, guacamole, and salsa. And lettuce, if you like.

Boiling dried beans is simpler,
should it be chilly.
Cans are easier,
should it be chilli.
Pork and beans to the oven
to bake,
baked beans at the picnic,
in which to partake.
Potatoes to peel,
and toss on the skillet.
Cornbread and beans,
That plate to fill it.

ETA: I was reading out a recipe to someone the other day, which included turnips and parsnips. I made up a song about root vegetables. Had a nice bass line to it, and I suspect the only lyric that was heard was "nips."
