This from the Daily Mirror – Penman Investigates 18/09/2014

“Sick Scam Over Shot Down Jet”

Fraudsters are exploiting the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukraine.
Their emails and letters claim that you’re a distant relative of one of the passengers who had no close family and, in one case, are the beneficiary of an estate at €19 million.

This is the first phase in trying to con recipients into handing over up-front fees to release the nonexistent inheritance.

The good news is that in Spain a mastermind of inheritance scams has just been jailed for 21 years and fined £2.5 million –now that’s a proper sentence.

Nigerian Prince Eneka Nwambu, 45, ran the gang that targeted Britain, mainland Europe and the USA.

The 15 victims who came forward lost more than £7million by sending payments for supposed taxes, bank charges and admin costs.

From a earlier report

Quote:
The overwhelming majority of the hundreds of thousands of messages sent out by the gang were immediately consigned to recipients’ trash folders. But all that was required was to capture the imagination of a tiny percentage of potential victims. Unlike other Nigerian fraud scams, which are typically run on a shoestring, Prince Nwambu’s gang was significantly more sophisticated.
