This is an interesting one and if you're ever considering selling your vehicle through a company like this, make sure you do all of your homework.
It's a simple scam that nets a lot of cash and unless the victim can prove that the scammer went ahead knowing that he wasn't going to pay out, he gets to walk away scot free. |

I don't have time to read through the whole thread over there, but who actually legally owns the car now? Did he complete the VC5 transferring it to the dealer when he allowed them to sell it and then them to the eventual buyer? |

In which case, surely the car still belongs to the original owner and the buyer has a stolen vehicle.
If it were my car, I'd be reporting it as stolen. |

If you read the rest of the thread it seems that the police won't treat it as stolen.
My guess is because he signed a contract passing possession (not ownership) of the car over to the company. |

Which leaves him in a sticky situation then. If he doesn't transfer ownership, he's responsible for ensuring that it is taxed and insured and he'll be the first port of call for the police if it is involved in an incident. |

Maybe that's part of the problem.
A V5 isn't proof of ownership. It just says who the registered keeper is. |

^^^ Wrong word, but correct principle  - as the Registered Keeper, he's responsible for tax/insurance and naming drivers at the time of an incident. |
