Sad. There is so much wrong with that uniform that I won't even start pointing things out. "SGM" Davis is obviously a disturbed individual.
I'm surprised he didn't award himself the Metal of Honor.

Just laughing.
What a piece of shit.
I recently took a bus trip, and listened to a Walter Mitty talk about being a 'Ranger/Sniper/Paratrooper' who 'trained at Bragg', which is just incredibly funny, on so, so many levels. |

Hey! I think I served with him at Breed's Hill during Operation Bullshit. He was a Marine Lt. General at the time. Totally legit. |

A friend's elder brother has constructed an elaborate fantasy of being in the service "in-country" during the Vietnam war. He's even joined Vet's charity drive's and organizations, based on these fantasies. He actually was a pharmacy tech in San Diego on base. |

That sounds sad about your friend's brother. I take it he really believes this and isn't trying to scam anyone? |

Almost on topic but years back I met a Canadian Sniper who was on some sort of Furlough and he wanted me to invest in a nice little Pub with him. He was very convincing but something struck me as odd as he really didn't understand certain things about The Canadian Forces or Canadian Fire Arm regulations.
I wasn't really surprised when I finally found out what happened to the Sniper:
http://www.irishcentral.com/news/belfast-con-man-sentenced-to-three-years-in-us-prison-for-check-forgery-149989615-237445141.html
By the way he did actually 'Buy' that Pub and bilked several people out of quite a bit of ISK before fleeing the Country to Greener pastures. |

known in the old country as a "Walt" and soundly despised by those who actually served. In fact they are soundly despised by everyone once the ebay medals and mixed uniform soup is pointed out.
I liked the marine's offer to discuss matters "behind the van, where nobody can see us", it's a shame it wasn't accepted. |

A bit O/T but a close friend was in the Army during the Vietnam War (a draftee). He served in Germany and spent his entire 2-year deployment doing absolutely nothing of value. His entire squadron was left largely unsupervised, so they smoked hashish and drank German wine for 2 years.
He got out, went to work, and that was that. Until a few years ago when a huge wave of patriotic fervor appeared. As a joke of sorts he put a "Vietnam Veteran" bumper sticker on his car and was stunned by how many people came up to him in parking lots to "thank him for his service." At first he thought it was hilarious, given the reality of his "service", but then he felt bad because people were so sincere, while he knew his military career was a ludicrous waste of everyone's time. He ripped off the bumper sticker and is a lot happier back in anonymity.
I would not be the least bit surprised if many of his old squadron mates go around now talking about how they served during Vietnam...... I've known a lot of Viet Vets; it's my generation. I have only known two or three who saw combat. |

I have two uncles that served in Vietnam. They don't talk about it. Both grandfathers served in W.W. II and they didn't talk about it. |

My father served in WWII in both the invasions of North Africa and Sicily. He did talk about it when I was a kid but I was too young to understand or appreciate. By the time I did seriously want to know more, he clammed up. I remember his last comment on it, not long before he died: "I had a pretty good war." Which means he wasn't on the front as an infantryman; he was in a air support squadron, but they ferried paratroopers into the thick of things and more than a few of their C-47s were shot down.
I have his squadron 'yearbooks'. At least they were designed like high school yearbooks, but they give the history of the squadron's actions all through the war. I'm amazed today. He was 28 years old when he signed up. They called him the 'old man' because he was 10 years older than most of his comrades. When he joined his signup papers said "for the duration of the war, plus six months." No one had any clue how long that might be.
Wow.
I photocopied the books for myself and donated the originals to the World War II Museum in New Orleans for their research archives.
War truly is hell. |

A pub I used to go in had a regular who wore a blazer with an Special Air Service badge on it, and if asked, claimed to have served with them. I'm sure if he ever met the real thing they'd have no doubt wanted a quiet word with him in private.
Anyone who knows anything about the SAS knows they are a covert unit who never admit membership. One of my clients is an NCO in the Territorial Army, when I said I'd noticed his payslips came from Hereford, where the SAS is based, he went all quiet about it and changed the subject quickly. |

My grandfather was on the beach in Normandy, he never talked about it. The historian in me wishes he did. The same with the old man who was in 'Nam.
I remember asking (my father), as a child, about some unusual scars he had on his face, I don't remember what he said. They are both dead now so it will remain a mystery. |

It truly is a shame their stories are lost forever. I am a big supporter of the National WWII Museum, most especially their campaign to record as many oral histories as they can. Time is running out way too fast.
I met two Tuskegee airmen at an airshow recently. How I would love to sit down with them and record a detailed interview. I hope someone has done that; I'm assuming so since they were sponsored by the Tuskegee Airman Association. I felt honored just to be in their presence.
Another great thrill was flying in a B-17 two years ago with a former bombardier. It was his first time in one of these warbirds since the war. Very emotional, especially when he sat in his old positiion, with a working Norden bombsight in front of him.
I'm a sentimental old sap sometimes. |

Here's what I know about one grandfather's time in WWII. He was in the 82nd Airborne, spent time in Africa, Italy, and, like PF's grandfather, was involved in the D-Day Invasion. We know he didn't storm the beach but flew inland in some type of glider that was pulled behind a plane and released. He also fought at the Battle of the Bulge, where he lost his leg.
I've never shared these stories, but the Christmas before he passed, was right after 9/11. Talk turned to that and he left the room for a bit. When he returned he had a large ball of gauze and without saying a word, he slowly unrolled it. Inside were fragments or a large iron ball that I would guess was a mortar. He said it was what was embedded in his thigh. Wrapped with it was some German patch that he said belonged to a Nazi soldier he claimed attacked him right after he was hit. That's all he would say.
When "Saving Private Ryan" came out, he insisted the entire family go with him to watch it. All, I remember of the first 30 or so minutes are the tears running down his face, the short sobs and his hand with a white-knuckled grip on the chair.
I cherish these memories and all that he did. I do not envy what any soldier must endure in war. |

I was in the Air Force for eight years (1980-88 ), during the height of the cold war, but nothing exciting. My dad was in the Navy towards the tail end of World War II and the beginning of the Korean War. I don’t think he saw any action.
I had an uncle who was in the military, but he died when I was very young. My dad did tell me that he fought in Europe in World War II. He was also on duty when the Hindenburg crashed. He was one of the ones who had to clean up the site. He used to tell my father horror stories about removing the bodies, and how the skin from some of the bodies would just come off in his hands. He ended with nightmares over it, and ended up drinking himself to death.
Had a brother-in-law who was an Army Ranger during ‘nam. He never wanted to discuss his time over there. Absolutely refused. Said he had too bad many memories.
Oh--this is a good one. Several years ago there was a guy here in Syracuse who had started a Korean War Veterans group. I got to know him at the time I was in the American Legion and he came to our post quite a bit. Well, this organization of his got huge and other organizations took root in other places across the state. He was always in the papers, on TV, giving speeches, etc. He was always talking about the Korean War and what he had done, and blah blah blah. Until one day a reporter started looking into his past. Seems the guy had never even served in Korea. In fact he wasn’t even a veteran of anything. He never served in the military.
He ended up resigning from his position as the head of that group and while one would have thought it would have been a huge scandal, it was pretty quiet. He had a lot of defenders who said that even though he lied about his military past, he had done a lot of good for the Korean War veterans. I’m still torn on the issue. I mean, after all, he did do a lot for them, but he was also a damn liar. |

^^ That brings to mind This Woman.
She pretended to be a survivor of 9/11 and later became president of the survivors support group. She did a lot of good but was also a damn liar. I saw a documentary about it. Lots of actual survivors were very hurt by what she did. |
