My church is having a week-long campaign with a pastor from Mexico. Today he read 1 Cor. 9-11 and one of the words jumped out at me:

ni los ladrones, ni los avaros, ni los borrachos, ni los estafadores, heredarán el reino de Dios.

(I have a different edition of Reina-Valera, but that word is the same.)

I'd read this several times, in various languages, but never heard that word as "scammers" before. The Greek is "αρπαγες", literally "snatchers" or "predators". The NIV says "swindlers", the NVI (which I must have missed) says "estafadores", the Aramaic word I don't know but the AENT has "extortioners".

The next verse says "Some of you used to be these". When I bait, I pray for the scammer, that he would repent of scamming. Sometimes I bring up particular scammers at the prayer meeting.

(If you have "nor greedy, nor thieves", it's a Greek manuscript variation. Aramaic and majority Greek put thieves second.)

Quick question: Can you clarify the addressing? Chapters 9 - 11 or chapter 9, verse 11?

ETA: Sure you don't mean I Cor. 6:10-11?

The versing struck a nerve (in a good way) on this end as it is near an area I am studying somewhat in depth. Looked REALLY familiar now I know why. A few verses down from what VX quoted:

Personal studies for myself is all and yes it is partially baiting related on my own personal end.

As for yours SOOI, am I missing something or are we just talking about Jesus crying?

@ SOOI: Try to, you have my word. Mainly taking this the direction of two people discussing our activities vs. our beliefs. Not meant to be starting anything close to a religion or politics flame war on this end. I have a big enough log in my own eye, so I'm not removing anyone's splinter even it it all goes to express mild incredulity. Smile

Like I said personal study on my end and he struck a nerve with where I am at in processing some things in my own study as it does have to do with baiting activity on a personal level and personal beliefs.... as well as a few other things.

If theological discussion is out of the question publicly, VX mind if we take it to PM? I would be interested to hear the notes of the topic your pastor is on, preferably in English.
