How did you choose your username?

Tried searching for an old thread and couldn't find anything so my curiosity needs to be satisfied this way: how did you all choose your usernames when you joined Eater? What's the story behind your name? Did you have any alternatives?

I've had three in the past. When I first joined Eater, I just figured what would be suitable for a hobby like this. Being young and having no imagination at all, I chose Cyric, the god of lies and deception from the Forgotten Realms which I liked otherwise a lot too back then. It didn't matter to me since I thought I wouldn't be around for too long: perhaps a month or two. But then I stayed and it stuck for a while.

Then some other forumites and my mentees started abbreviating it as simply "C". I started using that abbreviation myself too and eventually asked my username to be changed. So I became -C-.

When I joined again last summer, I thought of some options. One of them was "Comrade Romeo" taken from an old song that had been stuck in my head recently. It felt too long. Then I thought of Emcon, the short form of Emission Control, used for instance when a warship doesn't want to get detected and won't use active systems such as radar that can be picked up by the enemy. Felt too obscure.

Back then I happened to have been also studying lots of classic fables for real life purposes. The story of Ugly Duckling was especially relevant in this and I liked it and its variations otherwise too. So I became Duckling. Ugly or otherwise.

Mine is Lojban. "vonpaso" means "scammer" or "to scam", from the number "vopaso"; "xlura" means "bait", the kind one puts on a fishhook or a mousetrap. As far as I can figure out, "bait" in "scambaiting" is a different sense of the word, as in "bull baiting".

I get annoyed at being called just "vonpaso". That's calling me a scammer. But calling me VX is Lojbanic and good. Letters are often used in Lojban as if they were pronouns. Sometimes I shorten it to "vonxlu".

I typed into Google "biggest scam ever" and although Salting the Gold mine was not the "biggest scam ever" I was so intrigued by the story behind the definition I chose it as a user name.

Mine was from an old joke I know of. Little did I know there was another whos name will not be mentioned here beyond his being banned because he was a total puss-bag. I almost changed my name a few posts in because I didn't want to be confused with him.

Rumour has it there was panick in the Mod lounge when I signed in until they saw my IP wasn't in Australia.

"Firehouse Five Plus Two" is an old dixieland jazz band my father was a big fan of. When I had to choose a nick that was not related to my personal identity or baiting characters, I happened to be listening to one of their albums.

The band was formed in the 1940s by a bunch of Disney animators blowing off steam, and they kept going through the 1960s at least.

Tiger Rag - one may see some close stylistic links to even more novelty-oriented acts like Spike Jones, Hoosier Hotshots etc.

oscarpiles is a bit of an enigma as it from comes from a comment an old friend made many years back. Just before he was being sent on a 7 to 10 year ‘Vacation’ he told me that he would start writing under the Ghost name oscarpiles (That’s what it sounded like anyways). He laughed and laughed but I wasn’t really sure what he had said and times were kinda different (read tense) so I never had the chance to question him on it.

Years later when we reconnected I asked if I could use that moniker and he said “Say what?” He had no clue what I was talking about…

Mine is a fictional character with the last name of 'Snerd' that I made up while in between assignments at DLIFLC in Monterey. Long story which I'm not telling here.

Contrary to theories floated on the boards off and on for years - it doesn't have anything to do with an appreciation of TS Eliot nor, more recently, does it have anything to do with my appreciation for The Smiths.
