Hans Rudei Geiger, the artist and sculptor responsible for the monster design in the 'Alien' films, died on Monday in Switzerland aged 74 after falling downstairs.
Notable for his dark visions of menacing architecture and the nightmarish fusion of human and mechanical elements in his large format airbrushed paintings, his work inspired monster workshops, set designers and others worldwide, and on occasion landed him in difficulties with the authorities. He was famously stopped at an airport because the customs officers who inspected his paintings thought they were photographs. "where did they think I had been? Hell?" he asked after the event.
He was inducted into the Science Fiction hall of fame in 2013. Most of us will have seen his work somewhere but if you haven't it is well worth a look. just not from work, or close to bedtime. |
