I remember four. CBS, ABC, NBC (very far away and was quite fuzzy, the antenna had to be pointed just right) and PBS.
I explain to the youngsters at work that television used to go "off the air" around midnight. They would show the flag and play the National Anthem, then it would just be static. I'll never forget the final statement, "This concludes our regularly scheduled broadcast day, all inquiries may be directed to..." All stations East of the Mississippi started with a "W", everything West started with a "K".
Now there are over 500 channels on after midnight with advertised products to grow my hair back, chop vegetables more efficiently, chat with attractive ladies on the telephone, suggest a lawyer because I took a certain prescription drug that causes all sorts of horrible side effects or a pill to keep my John Thomas at attention. |

'70s daytime TV on 2 of the 3 UK channels consisted of this.
Can't remember what ITV had, but probably similar |

Don't know Little Rascals. I don't think it was broadcast here?
^ I just about remember this:
We had Rediffusion when I lived on the south coast. Seemed like another world in the mid 60's.

That's my memory of when the tv ended for the night.
First the national anthem, then the picture of the girl with the humpty dumpty. |

We had two channels -- one NBC and one shared CBS/ABC -- and didn't get a third until about the time I graduated from high school.
My dad had an appliance store that sold TVs. One of the local stations had regional wrestling 10:30 to midnight on Monday nights. When they decided to stop showing wrestling in favor of the Tonight Show women in their 60s and 70s started coming into his store to buy backyard antennas that could pull in a station 100 miles away in Omaha that showed wrestling.

There were some exceptions but in the 70s and 80s the FCC made most of them change their call letters. But for some reason a few escaped this mandate e. g., WHO in Des Moines, WOWT in Omaha, and KDKA in Pittsburgh. |

Yes, KSTP had their antenna at 280 and University, clearly East of the Mississippi by about a mile. I think they broadcast off one of the twin towers in Shoreview, MN now, again East of the Mississippi. This is probably all irreleant now with the advent of cable and satellite television. The old radio operator in me still cares, I still have KB0*** assignment.

The current (radio) tower is in Coon Rapids, MN. East of the river, so all is good. There is a fence around the tower and kids used to ground fluorescent bulbs against it, they would light up from the RF (the bulbs, not the kids). Only radio nerds will understand that. |
