A pensioner scammed out of more than $140,000 by a woman he met on a legitimate dating site is ashamed and embarrassed that he was deceived for almost three years.

Police say he is one of thousands of Kiwis being sucked in, and today the man is sharing his story to prevent others being financially and emotionally destroyed.

The elderly man, who spoke to the Herald on the condition his name was not published, is one of an increasing number of people being tricked by romance scammers.

They prey on the emotional vulnerability of lonely or older people and police say they are making phenomenal amounts of money from New Zealand victims.

Just another reason to feck love lads over

Unfortunately, not alot of baiters have the stomach for love lads. I've also noticed the new baiters joining have high aspirations in getting that trophy, or getting a lad to safari. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with having high expectations, the fact remains that romance scams are among the easiest for lads to work a victim. I personally (almost) exclusively bait love lads. Scammers taking advantage of emotionally lonely and fragile people just trying to meet Mr or Miss Right really makes me... well ..angry. I've made it my personal mission to rid this world of as many of these scum sucking sack lickers as possible. If anything, they'll certainly think twice about a potential victim they may be in contact with.

This is why I personally love working with the love lads. Just not the ones that switch over to a NOK format after a few mails which I tend to get.

These are the worst kind of lad. As if being hurt financially isn't bad enough, victims also have to deal with being hurt emotionally, feeling betrayed, and having to face that the feelings of love were lies the whole time.

I consider love lads to be in the same cesspool as charity lads, who scam people who just want to help make the world a better place.

Lads, no matter what type, truly have no souls. I despise them all. Evil or Very Mad
