I was reading through an old copy of the Chap magazine last night and found an article about the Sapeurs of Congo-Brazzaville.
Which jogged my memory about a post here a while back: Don't Necro Please
The 'Sapuers' are a group of fashion conscious young men who have created their own version of haute couture Congolese style. They aspire to the tastes and fashions of the former French and Belgian colonists in the early part of the last century. What fascinates me is, even though the country is coming apart at the seams, these style conscious young men are determined to keep up standards (both personal and sartorial) in the face of all the destruction going on around them.

A few years ago, I had an encounter with the character that was responsible for that magazine. He turned out not to be as well-mannered as he purported. As a result, I cancelled my subscription. |

I've never met him, though they hold the annual Chap Olympiad fairly near to where I live. I've always imagined to him to be not far off a latter-day Bertie Wooster. I'd be let down if he was anything less, but can easily believe he's not all he makes out.
My line of work brings me in to contact with quite a few people from the same background, and I have found their views on good manners can be somewhat elastic.
