It was a Wednesday Morning when a report came to the camp here and it goes like this :The guests were still sleeping when the gunmen, dressed in police uniforms, arrived early Wednesday. In the dark, they shot the guards, scaled the front gate of the guesthouse and began firing grenades, the beginning of a terrifying two-hour siege that showed just how little it takes for the Taliban to trap foreigners in central Kabul.
By the end of the siege, at least five United Nations employees, two Afghan security officials and the brother-in-law of a prominent Afghan politician were dead, as were their three attackers. But the story of how the rest of the people in the Bakhtar guesthouse had survived was one of courage — particularly by several United Nations security guards, one of them an American identified by survivors as Max, who held off the attackers for about an hour.
“He was on the roof,” said John Christopher Turner, an American who was a guest in the Bakhtar. “I tried to get him off. I yelled and said, ‘Please come down!’ ”
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the commando-style raid. As if to emphasize the ease and precision with which they could hit their targets inside the capital, the siege was accompanied by a minor rocket attack on the presidential palace and was followed two hours later by a rocket attack on the Serena Hotel, a luxury hotel that is popular among foreign diplomats and journalists and that has been attacked before. One rocket landed in the garden, shattering windows and spewing debris into the lobby, a guest at the Serena said. Another rocked the building and filled the first floor with smoke.
The attack on the Bakhtar comes at a delicate time, as Obama ponders a troop increase for an all-out push against the Taliban in Afghanistan, and it underscored the insurgents’ ability to destabilize even major population centers like Kabul. The American ambassador,condemned the attack, saying it had been against “innocent civilians whose only crime was to be here in Afghanistan.”
He said that the victims were “killed without weapons, in their rooms by brutal assassins,” and that one of the dead was an American citizen.
A Taliban spokesman, reached by telephone from Kandahar, said the attack was meant to warn people not to take part in the Nov. 7 presidential runoff between the incumbent, Hamid Karzai, and his challenger, Abdullah Abdullah.
The strike was the biggest on the United Nations in Afghanistan in its half-century of work here and sent the organization into lockdown across the country. Its offices, including that of its airline, closed, and workers stayed home. The United Nations is helping with the runoff, though not conducting it, and the attack raised questions about the preparations, which Afghan election officials say are already very rushed.
It was sometime after 5 a.m. that the attackers killed the guards and slipped into the compound of the Bakhtar guesthouse, in the Sherpur district of Kabul. According to accounts by the police and witnesses, two men scaled the wall and began firing grenades from their AK-47s, setting the lobby on fire. A third stood guard outside, firing in both directions to ward off the police, witnesses said.
A man who lives in the house next door, said he mistook that attacker for a police officer because the man was dressed like one.
The guest, said that as soon as he heard the explosions downstairs, he sprang into action, knocking on doors and telling people to leave their rooms. He said there were about 30 guests in the 42-room hotel, most from the United Nations, there to help with the election.
“I didn’t pick up my watch, just my gun and my ammo,” he said outside the guesthouse, where he had returned to retrieve what was left of his belongings. “I got as many people out as I could. By the time I got downstairs, the lounge was ablaze.”
The man works for an Afghan trucking company, took a group of about 25 people, some of whom had jumped from the second story, around the back of the house. They locked themselves in the washroom and cowered there while the fight raged in the front courtyard.
A number of the guests did not make it out, including two women who remained in their rooms. They talked by cellphone to those in the washroom, The man said
“They were panicked,” he said. “They were yelling, ‘What should we do? I’m going to die.’ ”
One of the women ran through the fire to try to escape but was killed when one of the attackers blew himself up,
An Afghan police official, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said he had seen bodies of women — one with a bullet wound in the head, and another completely burned.
The street is nondescript but is home to several important Afghans. One is Gul Agha Sherzai, the governor of Jalalabad, whose 28-year-old brother-in-law was among the dead. Another is Mr. Karzai’s sister. No one in her home was hurt.
A carpenter on the street, who had recently put in new locks in all the rooms of the guesthouse, said he used to think his was the safest street in Kabul.
“I’m not feeling safe anymore,” he said, curls of wood shavings around his feet. But all thanks to the US Military who has come to saved the rest of us is what they all yelled..
