Has anyone here started scambaiting the idiots running this new IRS "Investigation Department" scam from (415) and (347) and (716) area codes? More info from the IRS web site, and scammer phone numbers here at these links:

http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Warns-of-Pervasive-Telephone-Scam

http://taxresolutiontalk.blogspot.com/2013/10/beware-of-irs-investigative-bureau.html

In addition to receiving several calls from the (415) 662-8387 number discussed in the comments section of the second link, I also received calls from a (347) 637-6592 number. Since a reverse number lookup said the number was in the Bronx, NY not too far from my office, I asked the scammer for their address so I could drop off a payment instead of giving them my account number...so we could pay them a traditional NY style visit Smile. They then cowardly hung up on me!

Good thing you hung up, as you do definitely do NOT want to mess with them in person. It could be very dangerous. I'm assuming that by "NY style visit"you mean violence. That would not be good, and you could be arrested even if they are filthy scammers.

We always bait safely here, which means fake characters, fake addresses, etc. Nothing at all that reveals our private names and information.

So far as trying to bait IRS scammers, I never have, as I think it would be waste of time. They are after quick cash, and I don't think they'd be patient so far as baits go. I would think they would drop someone quickly who tried that approach.

And, I don't think the IRS scams fall under advance fee fraud (AFF), though someone else may correct me so far as that statement.

By the way--welcome to Eater. If you're interested in scam baiting, be sure to read all the nice stickies and sign up for a mentor.
