My dad opened a .zip file from his email. Someone emailed him an "invoice" and because he thought he recognised the name he opened the file. He deleted the email afterwards so i don't know the name of the file or the email addy it was from.

So now i need some good anti malware programms to make sure nothing is on his computer

He already has norton 360 or something and i am doing a full scan

I use Avast Free Edition, with Malwarebytes Free Edition, & Superantispyware Free Edition. I downloaded them all from FileHippo.com.

I'm sure others are using more advanced programs but these have served me well so far.

I agree you won't go to far wrong with those 2

I just cleared a friends Laptop of over 670 infections just using those and now his PC is running just fine,

IMO your Dad would probably be better ditching the Norton AV, there are FREE ones out there, that do the job just as well.

I am running Avast Free Edition and have never had a problem

Another vote for the 3 above. Used them all for several years and never had a problem. I have also used spybot search and destroy.

Avast is starting to amaze me as well. I tend towards Kaspersky as they seem to be on top of the game a lot, Norton has really lost touch with it. If going paid, try Kaspersky. If going free avast is REALLY hard to shake a stick at.

^^ shaking stick at Avast Internet Security! Maybe it's just me and all the pron I watch ( Shocked -- j/k!! ), but it kept locking up -- I had to reinstall three times since April. The paid version, no less. Mad

When I got my rig back from the shop last week, the kind tech had installed (or maybe it came with the reinstall, or the new motherboard, who knows) Norton Internet Security. I'd tried paid Norton several years before (360) and it was a total memory hog; got a refund and went with Avast. The tech assured me Norton has now improved the memory requirements and this is the free version. We'll see. In any case, paid Avast didn't work for me. Even after a boot scan there was crap on the disc which had checked out with Avast but Norton but the chomp on.

Malwarebytes and Searchbot, yes, need to reinstall both on this rig. Thumbs up

I think that possible the "Tech" is mistaken as far as I know Norton don't have a free version, I think he meant free trial... Very Happy

Norton has definitely gotten bloated over the years, as has the pc tools suite of tools once norton bought them out(go figure).
I would run something like the Avira rescue CD(kapersky makes a decent one too as I recall). It runs on linux and as such is pretty much immune to any virus that may still be skulking around on your computer, and it has pretty decent detection as well. When in doubt booting and scanning from a live cd like that is usually the best way to go in general.

I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials for several years, it is free and I love it.
