I am trying to sell something on ebay for the first time. I could really use some tips from the more experienced, I've checked out the guide on the website but is very basic.

Came to 419E because the laptop I'm trying to sell on eBay got bought by a Nigerian scammer. I've reported them to eBay for all the fcking good they are Crying or Very sad

anyway I haven't communicated with the seller yet and thought - hmm maybe they should be scammed back :p

...or are eBay buyer scammers too run-of-the-mill and not the sort of thing for this forum? I'm a scam-the-scammer noob

Have you shipped the item? You may need to re-visit your seller preferences.

Also keep reporting to Ebay. Be specific stick to detail. Go to your seller dashboard and report a problem buyer.

Go to Paypal and set up you preferences there also. Note: You will need to update all your current listings.

If you recently mailed the item. You can do a mail recall with USPS. You can print the form from USPS but need to go to the counter. I believe other shippers offer the same service.

The buyer pays for the shipping, find out first what it will cost you, and charge at least that.

Ive bought and sold lots of thing on eBay, my best tip is to time it so the sale ends in the evening or weekend when more people are online. I once bought a really cheap Jaguar that ended in the middle of a weekday afternoon (just paid the reserve), which came as a suprise to me and the wife when she came home (it was 200 miles away) and last week bought a £360 Harley Davidson branded leather biker jacket for £100, it ended at 09.10 on a weekday morning, just as people were getting to work, I was the only bidder at the starting price.

The sale is exactly 3 / 5 days or whatever, so you want to post it at, say 20.00 hrs.

If you start the sale with a really cheap opening price or reserve you will pay a lower fee, but risk only getting that much.

Of course if you are contacted off eBay or emailed by a buyer, or 'EBay europe' etc start checking IP addresses, there are many lads at work. A common scam is a (non existent) nice car or bike for sale at a stupid low price, but not in your country. there will be fees, or you send money to eBay europe's escrow service (fake) and never see it again. Likewise I have had buyers offer me top dollar for a car they havent seen, plus money to ship it on top - they dont want your car, but to launder a stolen check - they over pay and want the difference sending by WU. No prizes for guessing where the Ip addresses led.

I got a real bargain on Sunday because all of the competition must have been watching the Wimbledon final that was in play around the time the sale ended. I was expecting the usual last 10 second dash to be outbidded by a £, but it never came. Wink

I sell internationally on eBay. Be sure to read the PayPal Seller Protection rules for your country; if an Item sells under a certain limit, a barcode-scanned proof of posting (with online tracking) is OK. Over that limit and it must be a signed for service, where you can view online a copy of the Receiver's signature.

Also, ensure that the Buyer's delivery address is CONFIRMED by PayPal. This will be stated on the Instant Payment Notification that PayPal e.mails you, once the Buyer has paid.

I also accept payment by online bank transfer, or (sadly, very rarely) cash.

Oh, best time for an auction to end is - in my experience - around 1800 hrs on a Sunday. If you can do a 10-day auction, this is usually best. Ensure that you get as many good keywords in the 80 characters of your Listing title as you can.
