From last Friday's UK papers :
£8.8m cyber fraud arrests
SEVEN suspected cyber criminals have been charged over their alleged involvement in an £8.8 million advert fraud scam. They are accused of using malicious software to hijack millions of computers worldwide to redirect internet searches toward online ads. The scam was first discovered by Nasa, 130 of whose computers were affected, with four million further cases being reported in 100 countries. Six Estonians were arrested in New York, while the seventh person, a Russian citizen, remains at large. Each of the accused faces five criminal charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud. One defendant also faces 22 counts of money laundering. (Sun Newspaper)
From the Metro :
Let-off for lotto mob.
SCORES of Nigerian fraudsters who robed Brits in a £90million lottery scam are set to escape jail - by striking a deal to pay fines of just £1,500 each.
The gang, operating from Spain, targeted 20,000 people in 45 countries and fleeced them for up to £85,000 by claiming that they had won the Spanish lottery and demanding cash for taxes.
Nearly 90 defendants pleaded guilty in Malaga yesterday in return for a suspended sentence, a £1,500 fine, and paying compensation.
But most victims are likely to get nothing. |
