check the headers.
most vlads do not use the online mail box for gmail, which bypasses the security features. They'll use a mail handler like 'the Bat!'. Still shows up, but we suspect some may have learned how to hide it.

Always check the headers!!

THe IP is important because usually it will help you determine the person is up to something.....hiding where they really are, or using sophisticated methods a normal person wouldn't.
Satellite ISP, proxies

Most Vlads are operating from Mari El. They will claim to be somewhere else 95% of the time.

You look at the headers and see the email is coming from Mari El, or one of the Sat providers.

Personally, I don't think so.

So you don't know where exactly he is? Not a major problem. You have a good idea of where he is so treat it no differently from any other bait.
My main lad has used gmail all the time, and it's caused no problems.

I'm no romance expert, but maybe someone more experienced will weigh in with a differing opinion. Wayne is excellent at this stuff, and up_and_under has some very good experience too.

It's fairly common for them to use gmail, but if they use The Bat! then they have to turn off the option that would hide the IP address so they can do that. Most vlads use TB!, so odds are you'll find it (or something similar) in the headers. The bigger worry is that more and more are using things like anonymous proxies nowadays and hiding their location that way. Take a look what the headers say. If they say they're in Russia and the headers show the USA or UK or somewhere that isn't Russia, then assume they're using a proxy.

It's not a matter of determining where they actually are....but determining they aren't where they claim to be!!

IP is important, otherwise the scum wouldn't bother to hide it...sometimes using costly methods.

I have checked the headers using three sites and it is pretty much USA all the way.. one site indicates some link to Germany.

I have been contacted by another two using gmail both without pictures so there is isn't even the fun of getting the pics.

Give them a good slap for not sending pics. It's well known that any internet dater without a pic is just going to be a time waster, after all. Heck, that's why I never send pics to my vlads. Smile

As for the IP address, it's worth hiding for a vlad because, given sufficient prodding, their ISP can trace it back to an individual street address. Of course, they're not going to do that for the likes of us, but if a disgruntled victim engages the support of some lawyers and the police it could be enough to mount a dawn raid.

The german IP could be a proxy, or one of the satellite services.
No problem. Just confirmation you're not dealing with a normal person.
