I am posting this at 04:00 (GMT). In the U.S. Monday is Memorial Day. A day to remember those who have given the ultimate price for the freedom we enjoy. Many good soldiers, marines, seamen and airmen have given their lives so that we can maintain this freedom

I have spent time with the AMF (Allied Mobile Forces) which include soldiers from Germany, Canada, U.S., U.K., Italy, France, as well as civilians in Denmark, Norway, Belgium, and Luxemburg who were active in the defense of Europe. (if I left out anyone I'm sorry)

On this Memorial Day I would like to thank ALL of you whom I have had the privilege to have served with, and more importantly, those I didn't.

Freedom isn't free.

Seriously though, I have nothing but respect for those who choose to put themselves in the line of fire to insure my safelty even though I don't ask for it. Thanks.

And of the fallen: We will remember them.

I've been here for a couple of years, and threads like this usually dissolve into a discussion about politics.

I'd like to avoid that, and simply pay my respects to those who choose to support their country by serving in the military.

Absolutely. These people put their lives on the line and deserve all our respect and gratitude for it. May God watch over them.

I bought some new "colors" yesterday. I thought that it was not right to fly a flag on Memorial Day that was not fully respectable.

My littlest one interviewed my Dad about his experiences as a POW in Russian gulags from 1945-47 yesterday. Its amazing that he survived two years when the average life span was 30 days. Without turning this into a political thread I wonder how significant his American citizenship was. I authored it into a DVD with his interview as one chapter and made another chapter of him pointing out things such as a one month train ride in a cattle car on the Trans Siberian Railway on an atlas. I burned enough copies for all of his grandkids. I would suggest that everyone do something like this.

The one thing that I got out of the interview was how positive my Father is. Growing up I heard bits and pieces of the deprivation and hardship but he's really an upbeat guy.

I applaud all those who wish to risk their life for the safety of us. It was great to see while watching the Red Sox game in Texas yesterday, as a group of soldiers were leaving the game in the stands, people were applauding them and shaking their hands as they walked by.

My Dad was in the Royal Air Force, and I was born on a Base. Moved round Europe, and was there when the Berlin Wall came down (OK I was like 4 but meh). i have nothing but respect for those who serve their country. I've done the Army Cadets, but that's as far as I can go...I'm colour blind, short sighted, Flat footed.....But one day I will get a pilots license. Smile

I agree with Connie - family members who have lived through extraordinary times are a priceless source of history, information, inspiration and their stories are always fascinating and make events that may seem remote very vivid and very relevant. I know a lot of people who suffered trauma during turbulent times don't want to talk about their experiences but if they are willing to share their wisdom and insights into the human condition, good and bad, with the younger generation then we should encourage them to share.
