Generally getting cash from the ATM is the best exchange rate that you will get if you need actual cash. Using the CC to pay for something at the point of sale is also a very good exchange rate. Just call your CC company before you leave and let them know you will be in England and wherever else you are going so they do not cut your card off for fraud protection when charges start showing up in England or wherever. Also same for your debit card company.

^^^ Definately let your card companies know you're travelling. Trying to sort out a bank problem with a UK card was no fun in upstate New York. Not much fun when you're told to pop into your local branch (in the UK).
