As for the mince and tatties question - so many variations that are possible. a few baked beans in the pot with the mince can make a nice change sometimes!

As usual, Reprob8, you commentary is stellar. As for me, my noodle soup just exploded in the microwave. 3 Vicodin, and a walk to the mine shaft took care of that, crawling back and all. I'll be dammed if Nevada doesn't have any castles though.

What about doughboys?

I cook the potatoes on their own.
I usually add onion, diced carrot and diced turnip (swede to the furriners!) to mine.
I use original Bisto Gravy to brown and season!
In winter, yes, I have been known to add doughballs.

As far as Edinburgh feeling more 'Scottish' that would probably be right. I grew up in the vast Irish community that is the South Side of Glasgow - didn't hear a Scottish accent until I was about 10! Wink

I keep laughing at all the 'I work near the Quality Hotel' remarks - I must all past several of you on a daily basis!! I've probably also stood next to GingerHeid in the queue at the Blue Lagoon!

Why is there a statue of a firefighter with diarrhoea? Did he eat a haggis?

Where is/was the "vast Irish community" on the South side of Glasgow?

The Irish were all in the East End! That's why Celtic Park is there! It (Celtic Football Club) was originally formed to help the Irish Catholic immigrants. The West End was mostly Scottish Protestants. This was because of the shipyard smoke. We get mostly Westerly (Atlantic) winds, so the smoke would get blown away from the rich Protestants over the poor Catholics.

That was put up three months before 9/11. He's called "Citizen Firefighter". It's now seen as our commemoration to the Boys'n'Girls who died that day. Granted it wasn't built for that purpose but it became Glasgows focal point for flowers, etc.

I forgot to mention, I signed the guestbooks at every distillery, Bed & Breakfast, and tourist stop we visited as "Harry Manpurse" from The "Isle of DuCoque". So, if you're visiting a distillery, page back in the guestbook to April 07, If you see "Harry Manpurse", you'll know I was there!! Also, I kept in touch with my boss via email on vacation and whined about the number of castles I had to visit. When I got back to the office, there were 3 large fisher-price castles on my desk. They hate me.

Thanks for the un-necessary and not entirely correct history lesson. I do know the genesis of Celtic FC and the East End. The current Celtic Park is not even the original site of Celtic's stadium. It was built on what is now the new housing development (Silvergrove) in Bridgeton. The Irish were *not* all in the East End. Large numbers of them were in The Gorbals. Three generations of my family lived there. And they weren't all Catholics either. Some of them were just poor. The area where I grew up, Govanhill, was known as Little Donegal because of the large numbers of Irish people living there. Now we've all moved away, and it's called something else in reference to the ethnic minority currently living there.

On 17th June 2001, a bronze sculpture entitled "Citizen Firefighter" was unveiled in Glasgow city centre. The statue by Kenny Hunter, one of Scotland's foremost sculptors, is a tribute to all firefighters past and present who have served in Strathclyde Fire Brigade.

I take it you sampled a traditional scottish feast

Starters - Deep Fried prawn cocktail
Mains - Deep fied Haggis in batter with Chips and Curry Sauce
Dessert - Deep Fried Mars Bar with Fried Ice-Cream.

Drink would naturally be irn-bru, from a GLASS bottle, none of ya plastic crap...
