I've taken a break from scam baiting, but a friend called with a story from match.com that sounds like a scam to me. Below is the header info. from one of his emails to her. I am totally unfamiliar with the love scam, but basically he contacted her via Match and claimed he was British and living in the US. In speaking to him on the phone, his accent sounded British but with a European flair. He supposedly went on a trip to Nigeria and was robbed in his hotel....yadda yadda yadda. Can anyone decipher these headers, and is this the latest and greatest scam since I dropped out of my baiting?

Thanks, guys, you are FAST!!! I figured as much, but I just needed some evidence to back it up to share with her. I've been out of the loop for so long now that I didn't even realize this was a whole new baiting subclass had been born. |

Oh, Lord, mules....I'm scared to even ask!
I sent lover boy an email just to see if he'd try the same BS with me (further proof for her, although I think I've already convinced her that it's a scam...BTW, I was on the phone with her as you guys were answering, and she was VERY impressed!). I don't know if he'll bite, tho', because he'll probably wonder how I got his email since I don't have a Match profile. But if he's greedy enough, we'll see.......... |

BTW, I forgot to say "Welcome back, for19!"
(wouldn't want you to think no one remembered you )
This scum probably has profiles on several dating sites. You can always say that you got his email from a friend who saw his profile and thought you would like him.
[Edit]- Could you maybe break the long lines in the headers you posted? We're still too lazy for horizontal scrolling around here |

Ye gods, he has responded already! This is a guy who is supposed to be locked up in a Nigerian jail. I called my friend back to tell her I had forwarded the email to her, and he actually phoned her just as I called!! I don't think she is going to confront him yet, and I think I might bait the bastard for a bit. In the past it's always been a hobby, but this time it's personal. |

Don't forget that SHE shouldn't bait him, if he has any personal information about her at all. Might be good to warn her, in case she's tempted. |

Actually she outed me to him just now (not with any personal info. that could endanger me). He was freaking out on YIM when I told her to start asking him questions about 419 scams etc. Then she confronted him with "Did you just write to someone nameed D----?" Now he just called her on the phone. I told her to tell him "Screw off, mugu, never call again. I have already contacted the police" and hang up...hope she'll be able to do it. He's already gotten all her personal info and some $$ out of her so she needs to cut this off fast. |

Tell her not to confront him. He has her personal info, so she should just drop him completely.
That will leave him wondering and perhaps a bit desperate for a new "girlfriend"... or several. |

Arrrgggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!
She is not listening to what I tell her. She outed me and confronted him in what sounds like a non-assertive way (i.e. if she wanted to end it, I told her it should be "I know this is a scam, I have contacted the police, buzz off," and then never answer his IMs or phone again). But I suspect it went more like, "I think you may not be legit..." leaving lots of opportunity for lad lies and BS. As soon as she confronted him on IM, he called her on the phone last night and called her again today, and how he has ratched up the story and is STILL asking for money! And she still says, "Well, I feel bad that there is a 5% chance he is legitimate."
Arrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!
I think she realizes he's not, but she's in shock and he still knows how to pull the strings (although the sudden demand for yet more money should show her that he recognizes a victim about to slip away so of course he's gonna milk her for that last $$$$$ quick as he can.)
I told her NO MORE CONTACT, NO MORE CONTACT but I just didn't feel confident that she will hold strong. Damn, those lads are good. I've never known a victim personally before, and I just can't believe how deep they snare someone vulnerable in their web. It's different reading about it on the net than knowing someone who is normally an intelligent and together person who would fall for something like this.
God, I wish she hadn't outed me. How I would have loved to bait this bastaard and shove a figurative poleax up his bum without benefit of vaseline (you can tell I'm a little pissy this morning...just got off the phone with me friend and her "5% chance he's telling the truth" line really turned me cranky. |

My maths makes that 100% risky free.
If she's willing to go on a 95% loosing bet there is little you can do for her.
Except of course start thinking of a really nice way to say "I TOLD YOU SO"
She's got better odds with the lottery than this one, get her to move on and forget about it. Better still introduce her to eater |

You can still bait him. Get a sparkly new gmail/hushmail/fastmail account and act gullible Your friend is obviously coming around to the fact that she's being scammed. Don't give up! If you keep presenting the evidence and she's as smart as you say then hopefully the penny will drop and she will realise what's going on. |

@for19
For the record how much $$ are we talking about. I hope it's not much, this scam seems to go for smaller amounts initially < $1k sometimes as low as a $100.
Once the victim sends one payment it's easy for the scammer to ask for more and more and more ...................................... |

She didn't say how much, and I think it's one of those things that I just don't want to know. It just amazed me that even tho' she told him last night that she thought he was a scammer, he still asked for more right then and there! The lads sure do have brass ones.
Oh yeah, I am gonna bait this sucker once this all blows over and he is complacent again. To paraphrase Lilo as she immerses voodoo doll spoons in a jar of pickle juice: "This lad needs to be punished." |
