I got the following correspondences from a dating site. It's unusual to get them from this particular site as the administrators are quite vigilant. Anyhoo, I've gone back and forth a few times, always asking him dumb questions to keep him busy. Any other suggestions on what I can do? I did set-up a Yahoo account under the alias of Laurel Hookensinker. Is there anyway he could track the real me? Feel free to have a go at him if you wish.

The moment you send him an email he'll know your full address and telephone number! I'm kidding. As long as you didn't enter in any RL info when you signed up and your IP address doesn't show your location then it's fine. I've been baiting with yahoo accounts and using YIM for over a year and never had a lad get even close to my location. One did check the email headers, but it showed me as being halfway across the UK from where I really am.

All the "real life" info I entered was fake. Having said that, I have not done anything to disguise my IP addy. Can he get it from Yahoo Messenger?

Yep, Yahoo isn't inherently unsafe. It's just not as safe as googlemail which hides your IP address. So long as you're with a big ISP, knowing your IP address isn't going to help the lads track you down any more than you knowing theirs is likely to lead the cops to their door. On the other hand, if you have a static IP address at home or have sent e-mails from work, drop this one immediately as there's more of a risk that you could be traced. It's still unlikely that anything nasty would happen, but you're better safe than sorry.

Going by your lad's appalling use of language, he's almost certainly not from England. The phone number is a premium rate one and will doubtless redirect to somewhere in West Africa. Don't be surprised if he has to go on a "business trip" within a few e-mails of your correspondence starting.

Taking the lads on instant messenger can be immense fun, so if your IP address is reasonably anonymous (see above) take him up on his offer. Just take a little time before to sort out your exact persona complete with fake name, address, phone number, bank details, etc.

If he asks you something that you've not got to hand, feel free to get very upset with him (pretend to go off and cry or just hurl random abuse) whilst you think your response over. IM lads will take a huge amount of slaps before they lose interest, so there's no reason for you not to be 100% in control of the conversation.

This sounds like a Nigerian, or perhaps Ghanian, lad writing. I notice "precisely" the civil engineer who has an 18 year old daughter, yet consistently uses lower case i, like a teen texter. Notice also misspellings of deligence, attent, and the commonly seen phrase, "Have a pleasant day." Nigerians are always noteworthy for being polite, even when they are cursing you.

Thanks all for your help. I'll continue to ask him dumb questions and see if it will lead to anything. Should I ask him why he gave me a phone number with a North Carolina area code?
