I have been interested in HoneyPots for quite some time. Honeypots are just fake vulnerable computers used to observe & track criminals be they spammers or crackers.

Now, Project HoneyPot is suing spammers for $1 Billion in Virginia, a jurisdiction rather unfriendly to spammers.

You can read the complaint here

The best part? ANYONE with the ability to post can help track spammers & get them on the radar screen by registering & adding a link in their signature. It tracks spiders that crawl the web harvesting email addresses. They recommend using a 1 pixel image or another link that humans are unlikely to click.

Webmasters can add a link hidden on a webpage if interested.

Also, those webmasters interested can donate a subdomain or MX record to help track spammers by installing some software on their webserver. Lastly, on Friday, Project HoneyPot announced they have a tool so administrators can track their own domain for outgoing spam.

Just check the Announcements section & follow the links in the mini FAQS at the bottom of the pages.

What will be very interesting is to see how the spammers respond. They went nuclear with Blue Security so BS decided to close down rather than cause lots of collateral damage which the spammers had no qualms about.
