General query: Can you change your IP?

I just got this PM from another non-baiting board and in a completely different context but is this in fact true? Bear in mind the person posting has as much computer knowledge (and intelligence) as an amoeba [and no, it's NOT me OK?]

Might be talking about using a proxy??????? You can select proxies from anywhere in the world. They make it appear to other web users that you're coming from a different location, but your own ISP will have a record of your original IP, (whether it's random or fixed).

Firstly, you can change the IP others see you coming from,

when you connect to your ISP, this number is either dynamic or static.

Each time you connect to your isp you are given an IP, an address that people can both see and such.

Torpark, is a proxy, this connects you to another computer - and from that other computer sends requests to webpages etc, its because the other computer is asking for the information the IP is changed as its the other computers IP.

Without being too technical Torpark is possibly the easiest way to change your BROWSER IP, fileshare, chat etc isnt affected, only pages opened via the browser! Also dont assume your safe to be naughty behind a proxy, for years people find out the hard way when the police ask the proxy who connected the proxy are MORE THAN helpful and provide FULL details which will include your REAL IP.

but for sending a lad an email it works great.

Torpark for firefox browser & IE6/7 is free but better versions which also encrypt chat, outlook express etc are paid only. (however the source is freely available too which means we could if we had enough time make it free again)

and the mere mention "fear of being banned" we wont ask lol.

Thanks - this is about a persistant troll on another board where I am a Mod who is on the verge of being banned and has been told so. He thinks he's a clever dick and get around a ban by logging in under a new ID and IP that puts him on the other side of the country. I just wanted to know if he's talking BS. Apparently not Twisted Evil

I like using Proxy Way, specifically. It gives me a Nigerian IP for all of my BADgering. Ooops... Embarassed

I would think that he is talking of a proxy, but as my computer knowledge is the same as the said amoba I would doubt that he know how to go about it.

Thanks for the info. However, I seriously doubt this troll has the intelligence to walk and talk simultaneously so all this proxy stuff would be WAY beyond his level of competence. But it's useful ammo if he does decide to try it.

You really do not need the ability to walk and talk to install Tor+Privoxy Gnasher. If you can click a mouse you can do it. Most other proxies do require some knowledge but not that one.

If you have access to the script for the forum you could add a call to check the REMOTE_USER server variable. It can be called from ASP or PHP (5+ i think) and will give you the user name of the person logged in and using the browser, couple that with what browser they are using (ie, firefox) and what operating system build etc you can narrow it down and set your forum to redirect him somewhere else whenever he clicks the login button. Its a bit of work to get going in the beginning, but once you have his details you should be able to effectively ban him from any page you want.

I would just like to point out that this works in theory. I manage a windows network with IIS and this works on there. Not sure about the whole internet thing, but, you can also detect when people are using a proxy and kick them off out of principle if the first way doesn't work!

You can not change your IP, but you can change your *apparent* IP. Which is the proxy route. Semantics is everything. And also what many noobs don't realize is that if you use a regular proxy server you can still be found through the java connection. The professional proxies such as Tor do control that part so they are safe to use. And just in case any of you think this is the perfect way to commit an internet crime, the proxy server can record your IP coming in so if the police want you bad enough, they can find you. Ask Mitnick.
