^^^ seconded, and from personal experience there is no way to discharge a switched-mode power supply other than a bucket of salt water. |

^^^ Many newer SMPS are fitted with high value (1 or so M. Ohm) bleeder resistors to discharge the primary filter caps when the power is disconnected. I have modded a couple of AT PSU's (to produce ~ 13.8 V @ 14 A or so) and know well the input filter caps must be adequately discharged before the PSU can be handled. But I have the benefit of training in the electronics tech field and electrical safety was subject matter that one does not forget easily.
It's probably prudent to refrain from describing the process as quality instruction requires at least a video demonstration along with some electrical safety knowledge before attempting to do so under supervision of an appropriately experienced/qualified person.
Also reminds me of an old joke played on electronics tech. trainees or apprentices.
Here, catch........

Wow, I guess you were lucky.
One of the power supplies of my previous computers DID go out in flames.
And it burned some other components as well:
Pentium I motherboard (up to 300Mhz, USB, AGP);
Yamaha SW-20PC soundboard
Floppy disk drive
ATI Mach64 2megs Video board;
Of course, it was some time ago, but I still remember with horror and sorrow the day it happened; I played all night long Betrayal at Krondor, and when I wanted to copy the last save to a floppy the PS went in flames.
Fortunately the HDD was not affected. |
