G'day all, I was listening to Triple J this afternoon and presenter Robbie Buck mentioned how he had received a phone call from a journalist wanting to interview him regarding his induction into the "hall of fame". He was flattered and obliged, answering such flattering questions as "to what do you attribute your success"?
At the end of the interview however, the "journalist" concluded by saying something along the lines of: "We offer a standard $600 hall of fame induction package, or a deluxe $700 version". At this point Robbie realized it was a scam.
This lead to guest/co-host Terri Psiakis telling Robbie that he should have wasted the time of the "journalist" buy telling her that he was considering buying the $600 package, but first she had to send him some samples of what the other "hall of famers" had received.
This lead to the concept of scam baiting, where Terri accurately described the point of scam baiting as wasting the scammer's time to distract them from scamming real victims.
She then went on to mention the 419 Eater site, describing the things baiters have received from scammers including a gallery of silly photos of themselves, to elaborate wooden carvings (such as the Commodore 64).
Whilst I don't do the conversation justice, those responsible for maintaining and baiting on this site should take heart from the fact that mainstream media is not only taking notice of the site, but also of some of the messages it is trying to get across.
