Hey everyone! Just a little greeting here...I came upon this site the other day from seeing youtube videos of scambaiting ...Hilarious stuff! I couldn't resist finding out more, and I can't believe how many people are connected to this group...I sort of became a victim one time to a scammer thats why I decided to join and do what Ive seen a lot of people on here do to counter-act. (I say sort of because I was lucky not to lose any money but I had my bank account closed when this scammer decided to send me a fake check so he could get back my money) Still reading up and seeing all the tips you give but hopefully do some small parts to irritate scammers enough to mess with their trust..or at least waste a lot of time
Two questions I had too, since I havent seen anything mentioned on this yet...what's it that makes Nigeria the key place for scammers anyway?...is their like no laws there to punish them? Because I've seen the videos of scam busts and it looks like its not something they just let pass there..but maybe theyre not prosecuted the same way? I know Africa is overly corrupt and unstable already...its a shame scammers there don't realize they just make it worse for themselves.
And I wasn't too sure why the same type of scammers come from places like the UK too...because thats where the scammer I had emails from was supposedly located...if theyre safer in Nigeria scamming wouldnt they stay there? Or do they set up fake addresses there to fool people? I don't get that.....Doesn't make sense to be in a country that'll catch on quicker to their ploys. They claim to be so poor but theyre living in "jolly ol' England"??
Anyways, I'm here and I agree with whats going on to make it harder for these guys to keep ripping off people. Hope everyones doing well and safe out there, you'll be seeing more of me I'm sure

Are you sure they were from the UK and not just "bouncing" their email from a UK server? I've had several where I had to dig to see that there were not from the US/UK but from Ivory Coast or Nigeria.

As for why Nigeria, I think that there are just as many from neigboring countries, just Nigeria gets the worst rep.

I've only been doing this a few weeks but will offer up some advice....
- Bait Safe (never use real life info)
- If you don't already, use GMail, Fastmail, Hushmail, or Yahoo for baiting (ones I see recommended the most)
- Read a lot of the posts and the letters. I not only found a lot of ideas from them, but learned a lot on how to deal w/ different situations your scammer may put you in

Hi and welcome to the family!! Glad to see you didn't lose any money.

Sign up for a mentor, they can help you with all your questions and first few baits. I was told never to use Yahoo for a bait, use it as a catcher account, but no baiting as your IP can be tracced from it. Gmail, hushmail are safe.

I don't know if it is a key place but my opinion is that it is prevalent there because in the past the oil companies came in and developed the country because of the oil. With the oil money the country's infrastructure was improved. So they have access to the rest of the world. But (I have been heard) the mentality is to make as much money as you can without working so this attitude leads to scamming. I have heard that they all scammed each other until they gained access to the rest of the world. My brother lived in Ivory Coast for a few years and his view was that the general attitude is live for today. You just get by today and worry about tomorrow later. So a lot of people don't care what the world thinks as long as they get their's.

There are laws against scamming. That is what 419 is. The Nigerian criminal code against advanced fee fraud. But I think you see the rest of the world as the same as where you live. The world is not the same everywhere.

Yes they claim to be poor but I think they travel more than I do.

Thanks for the welcome, bombardier, it wasnt me, les noise, oxygen, drwho....and for the logic, still picking up on everrything...i do use yahoo but i'll switch if it means more safety...thanks for answering my questions too

I have never been to Africa. But as to why Nigeria is lad-base#1? It has the largest population on that continent. Also I believe the most colleges and universities, and computer basics are the com-du-jour. How a student uses/abuses that knowledge is a tossup.

I have been in contact with an actual Nigerian college student--Stanley N.-- for 14 months now who I have apparently gotten out of the scam life, tho' I must still use a bogus alias to convince him. But my feedback to him is always positive-- be honest and believe in himself and keep to his college studies. In turn he has actually given me password access to view his college activities. A perfect chance for me to zing/zap/nuke him, which in all good conscience I will not do. Lads CAN sometimes be turned around.

Their infra-structure however is abysmal at best. I take for granted that I have my own home computer and pay a mere monthly pittance for 24/7 access, as you do too. This is an alien concept there.

To date, the only African scammers of the 50-60 countries appear to be primarily based in Nigeria, Ghana, South Afr., Togo, Benin, The Ivory Coast, and Burkina-Faso. ALL apparently rent pc time in net cafes.

Not to vicariously 'diss' an entire nation, but I have seen the experts more than once say how in Nigeria a mainstay of life is to boast about how much you earned [criminally] without honestly working for it.
