Hey, maybe some of the more technically inclined will have an answer for me:
One of my siblings and spouse live in the middle of the farmland/country type setting in "hence no more wireless internet as they were used to in the city they previously lived in. They've enjoyed some of my small trophies and creativity in baits and are wanting to get into baiting. Right now they are limited to finding internet "hot spots" to use on a laptop and wireless card (15 mile drive into town). An wireless internet technician company something or other came out and could not find a signal.
Right now as it stands, they'd be looking at slow dial up which isn't so much an option as none of us have landlines - we all use cell phones. Satellite internet could be a possibility for the right price (the $80/mo. quote they got is out of the question for now).
Just wondering if anyone else had ideas? Of note, Verizon wireless and Cingular wireless phone services work where they are. Also, one of them has a HAM(amateur radio) license, so maybe there is a possibility by that means?
If anyone has ideas or need more info (like zip code, etc. I'll PM). They've seen how addictive baiting is thanks to me and would like to sit and do it at home.. any affordable ideas I could pass on to them would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Happy baiting all |

If they are in the US, DSL may be available to them. The network is rapidly expanding and typically the phone company will jump through hoops to get DSL to a customer (the company I work for does anyway). Otherwise I like option 1 from KD. |

I am in the USA
I had the same problem being in the midst of a forest. The only option I had, was a very very expensive isdn line. My bill was insane! DSL was not an option as there are not enough houses to justify them running a line here.
I now use a Verizon Wireless card ($70.00 unlimited) and am very happy with it. |

If in the US...
Im on the same boat and use Cingulars GPRS service through my cellphone which runs me at $50/mo (I think) extra. Heard good things about Sprints service too and they usually have a promo on their PCMCIA cards if you sign a contract. |

@lotta.....ISDN but no dsl? That is insane. What speed ISDN did you have? I'm guessing 56 or 64k. Probably not too much faster than dial-up was it? |

I do beleive Lotta's is the only solution. BT's siblings have no wired service. That means no DSL, ISDN or Satellite. The question is what type of signal the tech was looking for. If it was a Verizon guy looking for a digital signal that would make it all very difficult. |

64K
A little faster than dial up but still very very slow. Every time I logged on, it was a long distance call as there was no local exchange. My bill used to be between 300-400 USD a month! |

I remember from my research on VSAT that there were lots of relatively affordable providers in the US. Whereas you have to buy a 2.4m dish and pay at least $700/month in Africa, I think one of those pizza-size thingies was going to be ok in the US and monthly subs were only around $200 or so. Still not cheap, but maybe something to consider. I believe there were similar options in Europe too. |

Hey KD, that's an experimental, not recommended standard. Read all about it in the RFC 1149 at http://rfc.net/rfc1149.html |

I am reliably informed "802.11b can reach 9+ miles with only 6db gain panels". If you can get line of sight (maybe up a water tower or something) with someone that can get DSL on the edge of town, then you may be able to do something. The ham radio probably isn't directly useful, since internet-tytpe traffic would be illegal, but the expertise may make getting a system using WiFi fairly easy. You only need some amplifiers and high-gain antennas and that's simple stuff for hams. Licencing it may be a problem. |
