Should you ever have to have an endoscopy, ALWAYS choose the sedation rather than the throat spray.

Part 2: if they don't give you a choice, try to keep your eyes open!

fh5, yes recovered now, well, almost and I kept my eyes firmly shut.

Sedatation was offered, but they tend to push you into the spray.

Two times for me, in the past, thankfully. Both with throat spray. First went okay. Second? Oh dear. If you went through that, then I sympathise.

^^^ Yep, spray. Didn't help my nerves that they were running late.

BP and pulse also through the roof during procedure.

Its a few years since I had an endoscopy. I was offered sedation but told that if I had that I couldn't drink alcohol for 24 hours. Being as I had a beer monster coming for dinner the next evening I opted for the throatspray.

BIG MISTAKE!!!! I obviously have a very strong gag reflex. When i came out of the room after the procedure my wife observed that I had two black eyes and that the whites of both my eyes were red due to burst blood vessels.

Oh. Am I weird? My throat endoscopy was just 'here we go' (via the nose, admittedly), no sprays or anything. And I loved it. I loved watching the images on the screen, and when the investigations were done, the ... well, whatever one calls the doctor who does it ... wondered if I'd like to see what happened if my vocal chords were stopped, and we played around with me making sounds and him stilling my vocal chords on and off. It is a very cheerful memory. And rounded off by being told there was nothing Really Bad happening there.

Maybe I was not so much weird, but just lucky? But because it was so much fun, I would have happily done it again the next day and the next. No after-effects, but probably I was well-padded. One of the symptoms that called for such an investigation was an over-the-top amount of mucous in my throat. Nonetheless, I thought such a thing would feel the same for everyone.....

Long tubes/catheters with or without fiberoptic cameras do not generally belong in humans. Docs will admit this-they will use the word "discomfort" which means intense pain to regular folks. So a scope that "may cause discomfort" is definitely an occasion to insist on sedation. Or run long distances.

I chose the throat spray when I had mine done - that went ok, although taking the biopsy of the stomach lining did cause some "mild discomfort"

when I was waiting to go in, I was talking to the bloke next to me - he wanted sedation, and asked me what I was having

I told him that as I was driving myself to and from the hospital I was going with the spray

he changed his mind and told the nurse he'd be ok with the throat spray too

as I was being examined, all I could hear from the next bay was him retching for duration, and afterward he looked like he'd surfaced from a 3 day bender with Ollie Reed

guess he should have gone with his first choice

I concur. I've been taught when doing treatments on things like pec minor or serratus anterior never to say it will cause pain. Tell them it will be a bit uncomfortable. I prefer a different method...I tell people it will feel fantastic once I'm done. I guess an endoscopy wouldn't feel fantastic after it's over though.

Endoscopy? Now that's make a good excuse for not being able to take a phone call!
