Hey everyone!

I stumbled across the site and I'll be honest I haven't slept in two days thanks to you! I've been so enamoured by the glitz and glam of the stories! I want to officially toss my hat in the ring and really stick it to these (vulgar word) guys! So I'm here to study up before I get my first fish on the line. Incidentally I am a Network Engineer and can help people if they are interest in obfuscating their IP addresses or using TOR.

Well as you can tell by my username I'm trying to ensure anonymity with random strings so I'll leave my introduction there. If I can help in anyway please let me know!

Well I never realized that there would be such a great bunch of wit lying around but you guys definitely proved that anything is possible. I could have used Dave ... but then you guys wouldn't have had so much fun trying to figure out how to pronounce my name!

My cat helped me with the username as she's always on my keyboard ... here I'll let her say hi

Well thanks for the introductions .. I'm going to read more of the tutorials and the help section to get a better grasp on how to start my first bait.

One good question is ... do you normally have a whole story thought out or is everything done adhoc?

What about company websites and domains? emails addresses? Are these scammers not smart enough to realize that companies don't use @hotmail and websites that are simply sub domains? or do you spend time on building domains up with proper business looks and feel?

I usually make things up on the fly reacting to what a Lad sends me as sometimes they have more better ideas than I would ever dream up. Some Baiters do indeed spend a lot of time making things look legitimate while I prefer the lazy method and simply see how far I can push them without doing too much work. If a Lad posing as the head of the FBI is using a Yahoo addy then I think I’m pretty safe playing a Trucker with my Gmail.

That depends on the baiter and the bait. How's that for a clear answer? Wink

I think most of us start out with a good idea of how we want our character(s) to come across, and we may have some ideas about directions to take things. But baiting is like chess, you have to think strategically and be ready to shift gears at any moment. The are many times that I abandon an initial plan because the lad points the bait into a whole new direction that is even more promising. Frankly, that's one of the things that makes baiting so much fun. Once you get past the first few scripts and the lad starts to trust your character, you can start getting creative.

Nope. Which is why lads will write to you from addresses like "[email protected]" or "[email protected]". But it's not just lads that don't see that as unusual. I've dealt with a lot of victims at Scamwarners who fail to pay attention to the mail provider and fall for such email addresses. I must have told one victim at least a dozen times that the FBI uses an fbi.gov address, not yahoo. But every time the scammer came at him again he'd forward me the mail and ask "is this real?". Complicating things further, a lot of lads use mail.com free addresses like consultant.com or lawyer.com. Those add a veneer of legitimacy that can fool victims who might be more wary of yahoo or outlook.

I don't normally have a whole story thought out beforehand. I have a standard message I send to product lads, along with a product list, but what happens next depends on whether the lad orders grates or gears (which have a required parameter that the lad doesn't know how to specify) or grammeters (which don't) or sleeves (which can be bought only in multiples of the bag size, which is on the product list, but not labeled as such). I do have characters thought out beforehand. I know that Rod and Annette will return to shore Thursday this week, instead of the usual Friday, because of the holiday, while Jean, not being of the same faith, will work on Friday, and at least once a week delivers product to local companies in the Bay Area — even if neither is in an active bait right now.

As to websites and email domains, if they're registered by the lad and we get enough evidence, we report them to the registrar, nameserver, and hoster. But email addresses like [email protected] or [email protected] we leave alone.

I have characters with backstories but how they act in a bait or the direction a bait takes varies from lad to lad.

That said, there are some brilliant modalities (TLH / JojoBean's TWAT baits come to mind as do The Monsignor's Gold Safaris) that do vary depending on circumstance, but have a lot of planning / direction that goes into them.

Coming in a bit late here - WELCOME - To the wonderful world of baiting.

I find it's best to just go with the flow. 2 of my original lads from when I started are still tagging along with me after nearly 2 years (See my sand timers in my signature) purely because I have managed to just go with the flow of the bait.

They are also two of my laziest baits. I always strive to display minimum effort with these things.

I advise you sign up to the mentoring program - it can be really great to have someone helping you out and teaching you the ropes.

Wow... back story? I think at first I tried to create one, but over time my characters kind of made their own back story. Now I have their stories on hand for immediate excuses/explanations for their odd quirks and tendency to forget important things and/or go on drinking binges.
