I'm just having a tea break from gilding the decoration on the legs of a console table I'm working on. I thought I'd post this British Pathé vid of an old company of gold beaters. Looks like Habberly Medows of Birmingham (where I buy my gold and silver leaf) by the gold arm motif at the begging of the film. Still going, but I think they outsource the manufacture of leaf these days.
Gold Beating
I'll be gilding a table not that different from this:
Water Gilding
The base that the gold is applied to is called gesso. A kind of plaster made from calcium carbonate and rabbit skin glue. You paint that on until you have the thickness you want, between 6-8 coats. Then a final top 'bole' goes on that, which will accept the leaf. Bole is a mixture of soft clay and tallow that comes in various colours. Gilding water, is brushed onto the bole and gold leaf is applied using a special brush called a gilder's tip. The suction from the water pulls the leaf onto the surface and capillary suction makes it smooth out.
People think that static from brushing the tip on hair helps it pick up in the leaf. In fact you rub a little Vaseline on your forehead which just gives the tip enough tack to grip the gold.
Then you wait for it to dry out enough so it can be burnished with an agate burnisher. Too wet and it pulls off back to the wood. Too dry and you can't make it really shiny. To check, the gold is tapped, if you get a click, it's ready to burnish. A thud, it's too wet. A woody knock, it's too dry. Sometimes more than one layer of gold is applied (double gilding) to get a top quality finish. Gold comes from white 7.2 carat, up to 24 carat, which is a bit orange. 23 carat is the most commonly used for antiques and restoration.
* Just to point out. The gilder is using metal (known as Dutch metal or Schlag) for the legs and base. You'd never use gold leaf that way. A cheap alternative to gold. You can't even handle gold leaf without it breaking up into pieces or rolling into a ball. |

Jay Leno in a high-speed rollover accident in a 2500hp racer a few days ago.

It looks like multiple rollovers but that's due to the editing from several camera angles. They rolled once (you can see the windshield pop out in each clip). Still, he had his arm practically out the window just before the accident. He could have been seriously injured.  |
