/\/\/\ Thanks! We'll hunker down and be OK as long as we don't lose power. Other than that horrible scenario, the worst part is taking the dog out!

Yeah--losing power would definitely suck. I lost power several years ago (The Labor Day Storm) in New York. Had no power for almost two weeks. Thank Godit was in the fall.

But a few years later, there was a bad ice storm just north of me, and they were without power for several weeks with very cold temps.

Yuck!!! I try not to go there. We have tropical birds and no way to keep them warm without heat. It's not like you can wrap 'em up in a blanket!

Come back to Dayton! We are at a balmy 16 F, snow moves in tonight but will be "only" about 5 inches, should warm up to 36 F tomorrow, when snow will turn to rain, creating slush that will freeze tomorrow night.

There was a water noise under the house when the temperature grazed 0 °C (or probably went a little above, I'm about 90 m lower than the weather station), but nothing came out of the faucet, and after a while it stopped. I think that means there's a pipe broken under the house, and the pipe going into the house was still frozen. Oh well... They said at church that lots of people have the same problem, and some have no light either.

I just witnessed one of the funniest things I have ever seen in my life:

This 4WD truck gets stuck on my hill. No big deal. I figure the guy will back down the hill. NO. He decides he will go up that hill regardless. And he ends up halfway stuck in the snowbank. Now--he can still back up and out, but nope--he wants to go up the damn hill. He spends an hour spinning tires and shit.

(I almost went out to help him--but I hate helping idiots).

So he stomps off and the next thing I know--there is a private snow plow out there. It's him (I guess he walked home and got his other truck). He plows behind it, and with the blade up--shoves the first truck up about two feet up the hill, but shoves it more into the snowbank. Now the first truck is totally buried in the snowbank.

Then--and get this--his second truck (the plow truck) gets stuck from all the pushing. Again--he stomps off.

A half hour goes by--and ANOTHER truck shows up. It's him again, with a friend. And they try pull out the plow truck with tow straps/recovery straps. And guess what?

Yup--He tried to pull it out, and ended up in the same snow bank a few feet up.

Finally, another truck showed up with a bunch of guys and they got the trucks out of there.

If he would not have not been so pig-headed and backed up instead of being bound and determined that he was going to go up the hill no matter what, this marathon would have never happened..

He wasted three hours, fucked up the paint job on the back of his truck from using his plow truck to push it, and 99 percent of the rubber he burned off his tires. And God only knows what he did to his 4WD system.

I was so tempted to videotape it, but he probably would have kicked my ass!

Wow, Dwatina -- you are SO fortunate! You get to watch what's probably the best dog-and-pony-show anywhere around from the relative comfort and safety of your own window!!!
That should be at least some compensation for the foul weather for you, yes?

^^It was amazing. And during the winter I see those idiots all the time trying to go UP the hill. I used to help push them or shovel them out, but I've gotten older and decided not to help morons Smile

Never underestimate the stupidity of someone with a 4x4. Unless they have a modicum of common sense, they assume the decal on the side gives the truck magical properties.

According to grandpa_cuervo, the only thing a 4x4 is good for is about an extra 15 feet. Sometimes the 15 extra feet is just enough to get you where you need to go, but most of the time it's just enough to get you really stuck. Laughing

I have found your words to be oh-so-true. Our hill probably isn't as steep as Dwatina's, but cars are constantly getting stuck anyway.
We just take it really slow -- the truck climbs it dependably every time. Have yet to have to shove her into 4WD.

I see your point Jose. Folks with 4WD can be idiots.

I always go BELOW the speed limit when in 4WD. I figure if I need to use 4WD I should be going slower.

My other favorite thing about stupid (not all) 4x4 owners is: They are so happy that they can go in the snow, that they get up to normal driving speeds, long before they realize that the magical properties of their decal doesn't do crap for their stopping abilities.
