^Well, um, the round doughnuts with holes in the middle look like nuts from nuts and bolts, and the other ones look a bit like unshelled oversized walnuts or gigantic hazelnuts . No? 
Plus in the olden days a doughnut just meant a lump of dough, maybe

You have no idea how incredible it is.
The place where I did my undergrad work had a little hot dog shop nearby. The hot dogs were pretty mediocre but their fries (which they proudly fried in lard) were incredible. Add some ketchup and some cheese sauce ...
