I loved when a female called in with a problem. The first question they would always ask, while diagnosing the problem, was what color the car was.

Tom was always good for some aphorisms, like "it's the stingy man who spends the most money."

Two (maybe three??) years ago I was at a convention. One of my best friends is one of the main founders of NPR, retiring young and very wealthy. But at that moment there was a serious crisis. Doug Berman called him to say that Tom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and they would have to end the show. After a long conversation they decided to air reruns. Only when we finally got to lunch was I able to ask him WTF had totally disrupted his morning. He told me, in confidence. I never mentioned a word, but ever since I've noticed that the cars discussed on the show are awfully old. Lots of 1996 Toyotas and 1999 Fords.

It's so sad. I loved those guys. I didn't understand 1/10th of the actual mechanical diagnoses, but damn they were fun to listen to.

Tom acted like a jolly, dumb mechanic. But... he graduated from MIT. He was brilliant. But most importantly he had a fabulous sense of humor.

RIP, my friend Tom.
