I think the mentioning of a python just threw me for a loop. What the hell does a snake have to do with a modulator/demodulator?

I failed level four as well.

This can't be for real. Five to seven year olds have to debug programs and undestand algorithims? Shouldn't they learn their ABCs and count to ten first?

^^^^ I agree with dwatina, I don't think a 5 year old can say algorithm, let alone know what it is. There was a couple that I had to think about, the wording was a bit confusing and not all together the correct answer. (meaning, none of the 3 choices was the correct answer)

I got the algorithm one Correct then things went rapidly down hill from there; as in I didn't pass level 1.

Uh don't tell them at work as I'm a Specialist in all kinda of Techy things that have flashing lights and beeping noises and complex atomic structures and super secret passwords and I make a mean stir fry too.

I am kind of disturbed that they're doing this. I am all for teaching kids the fundamentals of using a computer and other such devices, but when it comes to actual programming, there are certain skills that you need to know and you won't have them by the 3rd grade. Why are they pushing to teach them how to program in the first place? Wouldn't that be a choice they make later in life?

I see this as setting some kids up to fail. I am a database programmer and there are just some people who do not have the mind to program.(even those who call themselves a programmer) I don't mean that in a negative way. I myself stink at languages & grammar. I have a more analytic mind than an artistic, creative mind. What's next? Kids have to pass the bar exam so they can understand the laws of the land?

How about teach them the skills needed (math and science) so if they want to pursue a career in computer science, they will will be prepared?

@SBAH, I agree totally - my son is 12 and has been using a laptop since he was able to hold one and messed about producing basic web pages when he was 8 or 9 and now tops up his pocket money by selling buildings he's made to people in Minecraft.

My niece on the other hand is 8 and, like her mother and father, she is much more artistic than technically minded and while she will use the family computer, she has no interest at all in the technical side of things

In the same way that my brother isn't happy his daughter is being forced into studying the stuff that the quiz covers, I wouldn't have wanted my son to have to do it if he didn't want to - there should be some level of IT training, but it should focus on what is necessary for everyday life, not trying to make everyone a technical genius.

Exactly!

If I were "Shorty's child" and ruled the U.S. and the world, I would do away with the way children are taught in school. I would take each child on an individual basis, find their aptitudes and interest, then focus more on what they need for a future in that field. They should know how to read, write and do basic math, (along with arts & science), but after a certain age, children sort of know what they want to do "when they grow up".

I think it's awesome that your son does building for Minecraft. (and gets paid, too!)

@ VX, stage 4 is the end - that is the highest "key stage" in UK the education system.

Our 19 month old grand daughter face timed us the other day, she probably just got lucky hitting the right app but I’m sure she may of meant it, kids sure pick thing up quick.

I’ll take the test later at a more sober time.

^ Absolutely agree with this. My daughter is 9 and at her school they have been taught IT in one form or another since Year R (age 4). She's a natural with computers so will enjoy learning about programming, but I can't see why they are making it compulsory from age 5.
