I have an extremely sensitive BS detector and a pretty good internet sleuth. I've turned in guys a guy who vandalized his own car to his insurance company, I've exposed liars all the time on car forums and when my ex girlfriend got a scam e-mail for a modeling contract, I knew it was fake before I finished the first sentence. That being said, I ran into one personally this time and, if this is a scam, it was pretty elaborate.

Messaged (yes, I messaged her first) this girl on Plenty of Fish

Small conversation later, I had her phone number. Started chatting it up. She sent me a few pics over the course of 2 nights and 2 days of short small talk:

I was already a little curious as to why those pictures looked to be instagram pictures. I have rarely received pictures from girls in that format. Either way, shortly after sending the second one, our conversation went as follows:

Ok, so prior to this she mentioned she was in an abusive relationship and was in the process of leaving her boyfriend. She NEVER told me that she was living anywhere other than Virginia, or mentioned anything about a bus until this request.

So, now I'm mad

Now I'm kicking myself for not at least getting as much info as I could prior to calling her (him?) out. Sorry, I was off my game.

Yes, give me a call so that I can at least verify that you're a latino girl and try to sell me on your authenticity. I called from a random work phone in my office. Went straight to VM. Was just a standard "You've reached the number blah blah blah".

So I have to try other tactics

First I try (poorly) to convince this person I'm still interested in sending money.

No response, so then in my next message I try a BS scare tactic. Even though I'm a software engineer and I consult with the government (she already knew this much, so I tried to sell it), I sure as hell never did consulting with insurance companies. My associate in Vegas is just a police officer in training. She can't help me. Why Vegas? Her phone is a 702 (NV) area code and she claims to live in VA.

Ok, so I stopped talking. In the unlikely event that it actually is a girl asking for 40 bucks for help, then she's right about harassment if I kept texting, so I had to stop. If it is a scam, it's weird that she's pulling it off by not messaging people first. Tell me I didn't ruin my chance to score with a legitmate hot chick LOL

Any thoughts?

Firstly if you ever planning on Baiting NEVER use real life information. Using your personal phone goes against anything we teach and practice here as it can lead to some nasty circumstances as we deal with Criminals.

So is this a Scammer? Hard to say really although I do find it odd that someone would hit you up for a Forty Dollar Bill after a few Texts back and forth. I also find it hard to believe that someone that looks like that needs to go to the Internet to find Love.

If she is Legit and not a Scammer then it is probably best that you back away anyway since you might have found yourself a Batshit Insane Gold Digger with a nice pair of Boobs (some of that is bad).

AND she did play the Harassment Card....

Hi Machman-First, stop contacting this person-scammer or not, they have your real life information, including your phone number. If you've done contracting work for any state or federal government entities, you should know something about security-handing out info to random FMF contacts, let alone criminals is not a great idea.

FMF is a notorious scammer hang out-that being said, it's not 100% certain. And that's without giving a scammer your number, name etc.

My suggestion is drop contact with this one. It isn't like there are no scammers to bait-read the stickies and maybe sign up for a mentor.

I give my cell number out all the time to random women. Been doing it for years. So far, so good.

I don't give any real personal information that I've never met in person. Just that I'm a software engineer and I've done work for the government. Even legit girls ask about that, so I briefly tell them something. I don't say what software or what contractor.

There are a few girls that look just as good as her that are real on those sites. Friends and myself have been lucky enough to verify that!

The photos not showing up on google makes me think maybe that's all she is. I'm just going to sleep easier and pretend its a 25 year old nerd in Vegas that's a smart scammer and not a Nigerian one. Yeah, that's it....

FMF? I don't know what that is. This may not be the right forum. I'm not looking to be a bait expert. Just wanted some input from the experts. As for my personal info, I know the protocol. Been an engineer for 11 years now.

bware, I'm aware of everything you said. I know I live a little dangerously, but hey. I've got Lifelock (that was in jest if you couldn't tell).

As for why I'm here. I was trying to find out if the "can I borrow 40 bucks for xyz" on a dating website is a common scam or not. That's all.

To answer your question, it is common among scammers to ask for money within a brief period of time for a wide range of reasons. The problem is there isn't enough information to conclude you picked up a scammer.

With all due respect, and don't take this wrong, but you are as much, if not more, of an expert when it comes to communicating with American women on dating sites. The profiles we deal with rarely present themselves as being American or from the U.S. If they do represent that, it is usually as soldiers overseas.
