I am a scientist, yes, but my bread and butter is as a teacher - yesterday we had a Athletics carnival...
I was one of the teachers in charge of the long-jump, and it came time for the 4th graders to compete... but no one rocked up, except for a very shy, slightly overweight and not at all confident student....we teachers gently encouraged him to have a go, give it a try...
so he did...
He stepped up and had a go, and flew, 2 metres, 2.4 metres, 3 metres.... end result was, this champion became the age champion for long jump and broke the school's record.
Not only that, he heard the other students near by chanting his name and cheering like lunatics when he smashed the record.
When he came up to me to give a high five, he said "Thank you for believing in me, sir"
That's why I teach.

Oh boy, teaching stories! I could share millions of those. I just can't decide where I should begin. But it's always great to hear anecdotes like these from a colleague.  |

Brought tears to my eyes. Those are memories that will last forever. I still remember my 5th grade teacher and all the encouragement she gave me and the time she took away from class to spend time with me. She used to have a strawberry patch and we'd make strawberry preserves.
