My co-workers can sometimes be big idiots. I was discussing my interest with baiting and they were shocked that people are still falling victims to scammers on the internet. They thought that was over long ago. I enlightened them and they followed that up with the worst argument, if you can call it that, ever. "Anyone who falls for that deserves to be taken." Is there any point in arguing with logic like that? This would be the same guy who bought a brand new, never opened, Samsung 60" plasma smart TV from a guy he new online, for $200. When I told him it was most likely stolen, his response, "who care, I got a new TV." Sometimes I think I work with people who would side more with the lads than the victims, and I want to vomit every time I think of that.

You could point him to the long list of employment, auction and onlines sales scams on Scamwarners.

He sounds like the type of idiot who would end up being scammed by a Chinese iPhone seller or an AutoTrader car scammer because he thought he was getting a good deal and taking advantage of the seller.

Or you could ask him if he expects 19 year old would be au pairs from India or other 3rd world countries to be fully aware of the immigration requirements for every country on the planet so that they don't get scammed by a fake visa scammer.

There are people in America who don't know that numbers beginning +44-70x are phony. They know several area codes in NANP, but they can't be expected to know all the world's phone systems.

There are people who fall for charity scams. They're lured not by their greed, but by their generosity.

There are lots of people who don't know that asking for payment by WU/MG is not legitimate, that travel agents don't issue work permits, or that Cameroon is a hotbed of pet scammers.

Lots of people ask on SW if a certain person is a scammer. They don't know the to us obvious signs, such as African English from someone who claims to be in the US or UK.

Some of the really good Romance Scammers won't ask for anything for a year and sometimes longer. Many of their victims are people who recently lost Husbands or Wives and are extremely lonely and want to believe that there is another person out there.

If he's ever Web-cammed with a new aquaintance he could be suseptable to Blackmail Scammers. Many have it happen after a few drinks with friends.

Also, these scum will target people who are older or sometimes not fully cognicent (sp). We've had an up-tick from scammers calling older residents here in Michigan and telling them they are past due on their taxes and will lose their house if they don't pay immediately.

It all comes down to people who, aren't exactly educated, but know how the world works, looking down on those who don't know of such things. And some people like to feel superior to those who don't know of such things. It's the only way they can feel good about themselves. Which is a slippery slope. That's how rampant racism started in America, poor white people, mostly in the south that thought, even though I have nothing I am still better than someone with darker skin. People need to do more self reflection. Does it really make your life better to feel as though you are smarter than others? I find this more in arrogant people. I have trouble dealing with arrogant people. I think that in this instance, he being my co-worker, I should just drop it. If it were outside of work, I would really settle his hash.

Some people won't get it until it happens to them or someone they care about. As far as victims, they are as varied as we Baiters. Anything from Doctors and Lawyers to Handicapped living at home. It just takes the right kind of Scam at the wrong moment in time.

Ask him if he would feel the same way (they deserve to be taken) if it were his mother, aunt, brother, (fill in the blank).....because it could easily be someone he knows and loves.

See, the sort of people who comes out with the type of crappy argument that he has are also the sort of people, who even if you reason with them and prove them totally wrong, will still think they're in the right.

With an argument like that I would take it out of its context and show just how retarded it is. Here are other arguments with the same basic logic.

If you walk during the night at that neighbourhood you deserve to get robbed.

If you wear a tiny skirt like that you deserve to get raped.

As you didn't get an education you deserve to be destitute.

If you don't get your kid laser treatment or at least contacts you deserve him getting bullied at school.

Same basic logic but most would agree that they are retarded if you change them just a bit. Just because anyone fall for a scam (stupid or not) doesn't make them deserve its consequence just someone think that they are stupid and above getting had themselves.
In the same way it is not right to bully a kid with glasses or rob someone just because they took a wrong turn.

You know your co-workers and I am sure you can find a few similar that will strike a cord with them and maybe, just maybe make them understand.

Anyone can fall for a scam my mother in law fell for one last year and got taken for 3000 and she is far from a dumb woman.
