I've had a few in my time, and in actual fact one came my way about two hours ago--and it was this very encounter that prompted me to find you lot.

One of the things we promote is baiting safely and that includes not using email addresses that have any connection to your RL details. So if you're going to carry on, set up a new email for a fake character.

The scam that prompted me to find you all was this:

This is the third time this has happened to me by the way, and my wife has been exposed to it twice before.

I got a phone call this afternoon, foreign sounding gentleman, obviously looking out for my interests, wanted me to turn my computer on 'cos according to him there was a virus inside my machine, and he was going to talk me through the process of clearing it.

First time this happened a couple of years back I nearly fell for it, but for a little voice in my head warning me that it didn't sound kosher--I asked the bloke for a number that I could contact him on, he gave me a number which turned out to be false--of course. Rolling Eyes

Second time, last year, I just let him have both barrels of a tirade of racist abuse--he hung up. Evil or Very Mad

Today, I wanted to be a bit more clever. I kept him talking as long as I could--y'know the kind of thing, acting a bit thick, making him constantly repeat his pitch to me. But I dropped a big one by suggesting to him that this call must be costing him a few quid. Very Happy

At this point he hung up. Dammit! I could have gone on all afternoon with that one. Never mind, I guess I'll be speaking with another one again sooner or later, so have any of you got any tips for this kind of thing?

Is there a name for this one?

How widespread d'you reckon it is?

My record is 47 minutes!

They kept asking for "remote" (access) I told them my missus does not let me touch the remote, she is always watching Emerdaleenders or some other junk. I offered to pay them and told them I had put a cheque in the handy little tray (DVD Drive) on my computer!

Quantom PC Services! I love their calls, I suggest losing the racism, no need for that at all and remember, the longer you keep them on the phone, the longer you keep them from calling a vulnerable person!

Scammer Call Center. Lots of videos on YouTube showing people toying with these guys.

Not precisely the type of scammer we work against, but deserving of all manner of abuse anyone can send their way. We primarily don't play with these guys because they usually call you on your home line, and we don't consider that 100% safe as they have some identifying information about you.

Welcome Steve! I played with those guys a couple times before I came to Eater as well. They scare me because I know my mom and grandparents would likely fall for it. The first time I wasn't prepared for it. The second time I kept him on the line for quite a while acting dense as a brick and needing to restart my computer a hundred times. Smile

Then cussing him out and getting chastised for my language. Rolling Eyes

I had one of those knobs call here as well... after about 20 minutes of shenanigans ( or I think they call it shitfuckery at Eater)... I could literally hear him twitching on the phone. It ended with us trading insults and curses. His english challenged brain almost exploded. But I think I may have taught him a few new curse words. From the sounds of things, you'll fit right in!

I had lad 'misdial' my RL phone. He will never dial my number again, esp after I "misdialed' his phone (free for me) and kept waking him up, asking where "Bob" was.

Lad: "I have no Bob."

Me: "Sure you do, he called me!"

Sleepy Lad: "I have no Bob. Who is Bob, never call again!"

Me: "He just called me. I need to speak with Bob."

Lather, rise, repeat.

I have had one call from the boys mentioned here and told him I could not open another window since I was watching my porn videos and that is likely where I got the virus from but I wanted that saved to my computer before he fixed it. When I asked if he had any good suggestions for videos he hung up on me.

I got that call the day after Christmas and just took in everything he said, hmmmm, then asked for the phone number of where he was working and it didn't match the Microsoft call center I looked up, so he hung up. great fun.
Be safe, get a mentor and post often so we see what you're doing. You'll see we're a wide variety of characters here and more are always welcome.

I have so dearly wanted another one of these to call me. Being a computer geek, I could have so much fun with one. Last time I got one, I didn't get to mess him about much due to circumstances -

At the point he chose to call, my computer was undergoing a complete overhaul, it's first in 3 years, new motherboard, new processor, new memory, nearly everything. So, with my computer in pieces all over the living room floor, I answered the phone to hear an Indian sounding lad tell me they've detected a problem on my PC.
I could not stop laughing. I was nearly crying with laughter. I was still laughing after the guy gave up trying to speak to me and hung up.

I've never had another one call me since... Sad

There was a great bait in the "Publish your work here" forum. I just went to look to link it there and the baiter removed the link because the bait was still ongoing; that was of Nov, don't know if it still is. YAY if it is, Sad

if it's done and he's not updated the link.
