Typical of the Nigerian Government, they only care for the rich.
I remember seeing the series on BBC TV where they showed thriving communities on the water, on the tip and on the beach. These people worked very hard to earn an honest living and have nowhere else to go. |

Damn, that's a sad story.  How disingenuous of that one official to say that those people came from somewhere else, they'll just return to where they came from. Some of those people have lived in Makoko for decades! They have no place to go back to. |

I saw a British documentary from '10 or '11 about that on Danish TV as late as last week. It's been a tactic of the Nigerian government for some time to force the people out of the slum, demolish it.
It appears that some Nigerian architects, who studied in the West and learned about gentrification and how and why we do it, thinks that it can be done in Nigeria as well, forgetting that gentrification is just an small corner of urban planning, and urban planning is close to being non-existing down there. So demolishing slum and planting flower beds instead doesn't achieve anything, unless you have a plan for rehousing the people you have expelled. And that they don't.
